The Duke and Duchess spent Christmas Day with the Middleton family in Bucklebury, Berkshire, but it was thought they would join other members of the Royal Family for a service at the Queen’s Norfolk residence on Sunday.
Instead the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Earl and Countess of Wessex, attended the service at St Mary Magdalene Church without them.
Buckingham Palace would not comment on the reasons for the pair’s decision not to attend, although sources suggest that Prince William, a Royal Air Force pilot, is on standby for search and rescue duties between Christmas and New Year.
It is understood they paid a brief visit to the Queen's Norfolk residence earlier in the week, during which they attended a shoot on the estate but left before today's church service. Click link for full post from THE TELEGRAPH

Camilla Receives Christmas Present Poking Fun of Kate and the Topless Photos Incident
FILE PHOTO: Caption: The Duchess of Cornwall received a cartoon relating to the Duchess of Cambridge as a Christmas present Photo: REX FEATURES
The Duchess of Cornwall received a Telegraph Matt cartoon which poked fun at the Duchess of Cambridge for Christmas from her former husband Andrew Parker Bowles.
All thing considered, it was a quietly seditious Christmas present that the Duchess of Cornwall received from Andrew Parker Bowles this year.
Mandrake hears that, when the Royal Family gathered around the tree at Sandringham to unwrap their presents on Christmas Eve, as is their custom, Camilla found that her former husband had acquired for her an original Telegraph Matt cartoon which poked fun at the Duchess of Cambridge.
The cartoon, which first appeared in September at the height of the controversy surrounding the publication of the topless photographs of Kate Middleton in the French edition of Closer magazine, adroitly linked the affair to the Government’s proposed cull of badgers. A badger was depicted in a field brandishing a copy of Closer with the caption: “Badgers blamed for spreading Kate photos.” Click link for full post from THE TELEGRAPH

Prince Charles Praises British Troops in Christmas Message
Prince Charles has spoken to British forces fighting in Afghanistan to tell them that the nation owes them "an everlasting debt of gratitude". He thanked them for their "fortitude and relentless courage".
In a pre-recorded message broadcast on radio on Boxing Day, he said that all troops serving "in far off lands" were in his thoughts and prayers.
He joked that he had been sent a "very rare and precious letter" from Prince Harry, serving in Afghanistan.
His son is an Apache helicopter pilot, serving as part of the 100-strong 662 Squadron, 3 Regiment, Army Air Corps in Helmand province.
The Prince's broadcast was aired on the British Forces Broadcasting Service radio on the Total Ops Connection programme, broadcast across the world from Camp Bastion.

The Duchess will give birth to her first child next summer, meaning she is likely to be unavailable for any foreign trips before the end of the year.
No plans had been made for any overseas trips at the time she announced her pregnancy, and royal aides said it would be “unusual” for her to be asked to travel within a few months of the birth.
A royal source said: “The Duchess will give birth at some point in 2013 and it would be unusual for her to travel in the couple of months after that. “No overseas tour has yet been planned for next year, and obviously the arrival of the baby will have an effect on the Duchess’s diary. Queen Heads Off to Sandringham for Christmas
Caption: Queen Elizabeth, left, arrives at King's Cross train station today to take a train to King's Lynn for their annual Christmas break at Sandringham
The Queen and Prince Philip were greeted by excited workmen today as they arrived at King's Cross station to take a train to Sandringham for their annual Christmas stay.
Their well-wishers - a group of construction workers - snapped away with their camera phones as the couple stepped out of their car.
In keeping with tradition, the Royal couple then boarded a train to King's Lynn station in Norfolk on a 90-minute journey to the private estate where they will enjoy the festivities surrounded by family.
She surprised other passengers by travelling first class on the 10.45am First Capital Connect service from the station.
They discreetly joined more than 50 other unsuspecting people on the train. The scheduled service, which had no buffet car or refreshments trolley, went via Cambridge and arrived six minutes late at 12.26pm in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

William and Kate Make Surprise Appearance at their Household Office Party
Recovery: The Duchess' appearance was the second since she was released from hospital on December 6, the first being her surprise appearance at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a surprise appearance at their office Christmas party this afternoon. The couple’s choice of venue for their annual Household bash was not, however, The Ritz or some other glitzy high-end venue - but a local London restaurant chain.
William and Kate turned up with minimal fuss to Bumpkin in Notting Hill, where they had hired, appropriately, The Queen’s Room, (so called because of a giant frame portrait of the monarch, the prince’s grandmother, which hangs from the wall.

It surely wasn’t what she – or the publisher who stumped up a £400,000 advance – expected.
But Pippa Middleton’s party-planning book has struggled to sell after attracting an avalanche of unkind reviews blasting its advice as ‘glaringly obvious’.
If she is disheartened, however, ‘Her Royal Hotness’ isn’t showing it – and has even launched a tireless book-signing blitzkrieg in an attempt to turn things around.

Caption: The Duchess of Cambridge will not be well enough to attend the Hobbit premiere Photo: EPA
The Duchess of Cambridge has pulled out of attending the Royal Film Performance of The Hobbit tomorrow night because of her ongoing pregnancy sickness, St James's Palace has announced.
The Duchess spent three nights at the King Edward VII Hospital in London last week being treated for hyperemesis gravidarum, which can lead to dehydration and weight loss.
Although she was discharged last Thursday, her condition worsened on Sunday while she was recuperating at Kensington Palace, forcing the Duke of Cambridge to cancel a planned evening engagement to remain by her side.
Her decision to miss the film premiere does not come as a surprise, as experts in the condition said she would continue to feel unwell for several weeks.

Kate Leaves the Hospital Looking Perfectly Perfect!
The Duchess of Cambridge pictured leaving the King Edward VII on December 6. Photo: EPA
Hard to believe that the Duchess of Cambridge had just spent three days in hospital on a drip suffering from acute morning sickness as she left King Edward VII Hospital this morning.
We've got to hand it to her though: to face the press looking this flawless after such a rough ride when she could have pulled a sweater over her head and bundled into the back of a waiting car, shows unsurpassable dedication to her duty. No, not as a royal - as a style icon.
